FIRST FIX - SECOND FIX - UPGRADES
For more than 50+ years Wheeler’s has been a well-known, respected name in north west Wiltshire, synonymous with delivering the highest quality electrical services in the region.
Whether you want an extra electrical socket fitted or a whole property re-wired, we’ll get the job done professionally, efficiently and affordably.
Our team of qualified NICEIC approved electricians, assisted by a group of talented apprentice electricians, carry out general electrical work for homeowners, business owners and managers, as well as landlords who want new electrical installations, upgrades, improvements or repairs. We also deliver electrical services under contract to architects, consultants, developers, property managers, construction companies and many more long-standing clients.
Working in towns and villages across a wide swathe of the counties of Wiltshire and Somerset our electrical engineers are frequently called upon to upgrade and renovate the electrical systems on older properties – even listed buildings and historic buildings.
We’re adept and highly experienced at bringing older electrical systems up to current safety and compliance standards by installing new cables (first fix), fitting new sockets and lights (second fix) and upgrading old fuse boxes for a consumer unit that is capable of handling modern electrical loads, with safety features like RCDs (Residual Current Devices).
Although there are no hard and fast rules, it is likely that if your property has not been rewired within the last 25 to 30 years, it will need a full or partial rewire. Everything may be working fine, but old installations may give you a hint that the system is outdated, damaged, worn out or overloaded.
Signs your property needs rewiring include:
You’ll also need to consider a rewire if you are planning significant remodelling work or building an extension, in order to conform to Part P of the Building Regulations which necessitates upgrading existing wiring to safely handle the additional load.
If you’re in doubt about the condition of the electrics in your property, don’t hesitate to arrange for us to carry out a professional inspection and provide you with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) so you know exactly where you stand.
Our electrical engineers are qualified, experienced, NICEIC registered and regulated – therefore fully competent and capable of carrying out consumer unit replacements and new installations according to Part P of the Building Regulations.
The consumer unit – the modern version of an old-fashioned fuse box – is the brain of a building’s electrical system, distributing power and protecting the circuits. It can quickly detect and respond to electrical faults, preventing issues like short circuits, overloads and earthing faults which could otherwise cause serious damage to your electrical system, or even cause a fire.
If your consumer unit is old it may no longer comply with the latest standard (BS 7671) and an upgrade is required. An older unit may also struggle to keep up with the demands of modern appliances and devices, and if you’re planning a home extension or added features like an EV charger, a new kitchen, or an electric shower perhaps, you will also need extra consumer unit capacity.
If you’re not sure about the condition of your consumer unit, or have an old-style fuse board in your property, let us give you peace of mind by inspecting your electrical system. It may well be that a consumer unit upgrade would enhance the safety, efficiency and functionality of your home or workplace.
