WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
No matter whether you’re a homeowner dealing with a tripped electrical circuit, a landlord managing safety certificates across a portfolio of properties, or a developer planning the electrics for a full building renovation, it helps to know exactly what to expect before you pick up the phone to call in a contractor.
On this page we’ve endeavoured to give comprehensive answers to the questions asked most often by our electrical customers, covering a variety of issues from pricing and response times to qualifications and certification.
People turn to us for electrical services because Wheeler’s has been carrying out electrical work across Wiltshire, Somerset and the surrounding counties since 1982. What started as a family-run business has grown into an Employee Owned Trust with more than 120 staff and over £250 million worth of projects delivered. Our approach never changes: we provide honest advice, transparent pricing, and fully qualified engineers who treat every property with care.
If you can’t find the answer you need below, our team is always happy to talk it through, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.
The cost of electrical work varies depending on the type of work required, the complexity of the installation, the materials needed and the time required on site. Wheeler’s can provide either fixed-price quotations or hourly rate pricing, depending on the nature of the work. All survey visits are free of charge, and costs are clearly explained before any work begins. During normal working hours there is no call-out fee, although a minimum charge of one hour may apply. Any additional work or materials required will always be discussed and agreed beforehand, ensuring complete transparency with no hidden fees.
Subject to engineer availability, we always endeavour to help if the matter is urgent and will try to rearrange schedules where possible to accommodate emergency situations. Our experienced office team assesses each call and prioritises work based on urgency and safety. If you are experiencing an electrical fault, please provide as much information as possible when you contact us. If there is an immediate danger, such as burning smells, smoke or exposed live wiring, isolate the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and seek emergency assistance where necessary.
Our engineers take pride in working professionally and respectfully within your home. Protective equipment is used where appropriate, work areas are kept tidy throughout the job and every effort is made to minimise disruption. If work requires floor coverings to be lifted or walls to be accessed, this will be discussed with you beforehand. We aim to leave every property clean, safe and ready to use once work is complete.
Yes. Landlords have legal responsibilities to ensure electrical installations within rented properties are safe. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) identifies any issues that may require attention and helps demonstrate compliance with current regulations. Following the inspection, landlords receive a detailed report outlining the condition of the installation and any remedial work that may be required. Wheeler’s can also carry out any necessary repairs and certification to help landlords remain compliant.
Yes. We regularly assist landlords and managing agents during tenancy changes. Electrical repairs, upgrades, testing, inspections and certification can all be scheduled between tenancies. We provide flexible appointment options, clear reporting and can coordinate directly with letting agents where authorised, helping turn properties around quickly and efficiently.
Yes. Wheeler’s can provide Electrical Installation Certificates (EICs), Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificates, Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) and other relevant certification where applicable. Certificates are issued following completion of qualifying work and provide confirmation that installations have been inspected, tested and completed in accordance with current regulations. Customers should keep these documents for future reference, property sales and compliance purposes.
Our experienced electrical team works closely with homeowners, builders and other trades throughout renovation and refurbishment projects. We can assist with planning electrical layouts, lighting design, power requirements, first-fix and second-fix installations, consumer unit upgrades and future-proofing solutions such as smart home technology or EV charging. We coordinate closely with other contractors to help keep projects running smoothly and ensure all work complies with current regulations.
The right solution depends on the age, condition and history of your electrical installation. In some properties, targeted upgrades may be sufficient, while older installations or systems showing significant wear may benefit from a full rewire. Following an inspection, our engineers will provide honest, practical recommendations based on safety, reliability and long-term value. We focus on providing the most appropriate solution rather than recommending unnecessary work.
Yes. All engineers working within our Building Services Department are DBS checked. Additional or updated checks can also be arranged where a specific project or client requires them, providing added reassurance and peace of mind for customers.

Wheeler’s has been an NICEIC Approved Contractor for over 50 years, demonstrating our commitment to high standards, safety and compliance. Engineers also undertake ongoing training and assessment as required to maintain qualifications and keep up to date with current regulations and emerging technologies.
